Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The American Red Cross announced a new smartphone application to promote National Flood Safety Awareness Week.
The app features an emergency "I'm safe" button that alerts family, friends, and the Red Cross national headquarters, as well as an alarm for disaster warnings that alert users even if the app isn't open.
"It will alarm you if something is going on. It will go off and you will hear it,” Shelley Bierwiler of the Southern Tier American Red Cross said, "and then you can just pick up your phone and it will give you directions. This is what's going on, this is the up-to-date weather report, there are shelters available in these places.”
The app is free to download and can be found by searching "American Red Cross Flood" at the app store.
National Flood Safety Awareness week runs through Saturday.
