Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Hundreds took to the streets of downtown Binghamton for the annual John McKenna Memorial 5K.

More than 600 runners showed their support for the Binghamton Crew team and the United State Marines.

John McKenna died in Iraq in 2006 during his third tour with the Marines.

He was a leader of the Binghamton University crew team, which now organizes the 5K in McKenna's name each year.

"It's imagining as if a brother to us had been killed and it's something special. We've never known him but in every awards ceremony, every time we hear the McKenna's talk it brings us to tears and it really cuts home to a lot of people," said student organizer Kelsey Wasilewski.

John McKenna's parent's attend the memorial run every year.

The event also raises money for scholarships for two athletes on the Binghamton Crew team who demonstrate the spirit of John McKenna.
