Afton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The River Club in Afton is typically closed for the season, but the owners opened its doors on Christmas day to feed hundreds of people in their community.
It's the second year the family-owned River Club Restaurant is providing a free Christmas meal.
They have between 40-50 volunteers are prepared to serve up to 1,000 guests.
"That's probably the easiest part," said Meghan Murray of the River Club Restaurant, "People hear about it, friends and family and customers of ours that come in all season long, you know all you have to do is mention it and they're here. They're ready to go. That's the easiest part is finding volunteers."
This year they've expanded the event. Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by for a visit and brought donated gifts with them. Every child at the River Club could choose a gift to take home.
"We wanted to make sure that no child goes without," Mrs. Claus said, "Santa did a really good job bringing all kinds down on his sleigh."
Dinner is prepared by the River Club's regular staff. It's a combination of bought and donated items. One generous donor gave 100 turkeys to serve as the main dish.
