Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Every year, around nine million Americans have their identity stolen.

To help protect your identity, GHS Federal Credit Union sponsored "Shred Day" on Saturday.

Papers with personal confidential information were tossed into trash cans by community members to be destroyed.

"It's very important for people to dispose of the personal identifying information correctly," said Kate Burke, GHS Marketing Specialist.

"Identify theft is a big problem and its difficult to try to rectify that situation once someone becomes involved in a compromise or identify theft."

There are a few different ways to protect yourself at home from identity theft:

Don't leave your personal information lying around when a stranger is in the house, stop mail from being sent to your home when you're away and always know who you're talking to before you give away personal information like a social security number.
