Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Part of Taft Avenue in Endwell has temporarily reopened after a sinkhole caused it to close down Saturday night.
Commissioner of the Broome County Public Works Department said the short periods of heavy rains on Saturday caused a sinkhole on Taft Avenue.
The department said one lane will be closed for some time.
Crews will work on creating a detour through nearby residential streets Saturday night.
"We went in and analyzed what the problem is," said Public Works Commissioner Dan Schofield, "It looks like some of that pipe is damaged as well so we're going to have to do some pipe repair in the next three to four weeks."
Schofield says the temporary fix is safe for drivers and the public works department will continue to monitor that stretch of road.
Taft Avenue will need to be closed down for a few days once the new pipe is ready to be replaced.
"We want to make sure that we have everything on hand before we start," Schofield said, "Because we don't want the street closed or set up any detours longer than we have to."
