Town of Maine, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Two local soldiers are back in Broome County after spending a year of deployment in Afghanistan.

The men stepped off their plane Tuesday afternoon at the Greater Binghamton Airport and straight into the arms of their loved ones.

Ed Holmberg and Thomas Rome serve in the Army National Guard and were deployed last September to Afghanistan.

"Counting down the days and hoping all the travel lined up," said Rome, of Kirkwood, "So happy to be home. Long year, rewarding year though. Happy to see the kids and wife."

The soldiers were welcomed by friends, family and some from American Legion Post 1194, where they're both members.

"It's amazing," said Holmberg, of Port Crane, "You don't know how fast they grow up when you're gone until your gone for that time. It's just amazing what happens when you're gone. So it was good, but it's better being home."

Both of the soldiers say they have no big plans, although they say a family vacation is in order.
