Apalachin, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A multi-million dollar single stream recycling center opens in Tioga County.

Taylor Garbage Service and Southern Tier Recyclers celebrated their new facility in Apalachin on Friday. It is located at 5730 State Route 434.

The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce was there to help cut the ribbon at an open house event.

The facility will be operated by Southern Tier Recyclers. It's 30,000 square feet. It includes both mechanized and hand sorting for maximized material recovery from the waste stream.

"The investment here in the plant was born for the need of a no-sort system so folks didn't have to sort it curbside. Everything can go in one container. It will increase participate and make for less solid waste entering the landfill," said Les Plaine, Taylor Garbage.

Plaine says the project has been in the works for three years.

"We're excited to have the plant open and start with our recycling," said Plaine.

The specialized sorting and identification equipment is created by Green Machine, Inc., out of Whitney Point. The equipment allows the plant to process up to 25 tons an hour of mixed recyclable materials.

"This is a major investment in Tioga County. It's going to ensure that Tioga County has access to single stream recycling, which certainly is helpful for the residents in collecting their recyclables," said John Green, Managing Director for Green Machine, "This is primarily an automated system but it does employ 11 post-inspection and sorting individuals to make sure the quality of the product is kept clean for the end market."

Taylor Garbage and Southern Tier Recyclers says this provides the opportunity to bring recycling to areas that do not currently enjoy a recycling program of any kind. They anticipate at least a 20 to 30 percent increase in participation with the switch over to a fully no sort curbside pickup of recycling.
