Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The excitement has been building over the past year for a project that would give some Binghamton kids a place to play off the streets.
Tuesday evening officials cut the ribbon on a new jungle gym at the Walnut Street Park.
The site once served as a gravel parking lot, but a resident bought the land and donated the property to the city.
Then community members teamed up with Binghamton University students to install a swing set, mural and, most recently, the jungle gym.
"It's taken a lot of work. The most amazing part of it is that the work has all been resident driven," said Binghamton City Council President Teri Rennia.
"We put it in on Friday and the kids started coming right after school to help and play," said PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholars Program President Theo Baktidy.
He added that area children helped workers move more than 75 yards of mulch as the project wrapped up last Friday so they could begin playing on the equipment.
