Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Local Wendy's restaurants donate $5,000 to the American Red Cross.

During March, which was also Red Cross Month, 17 area Wendy's restaurants stepped up raising thousands of dollars for the non-profit.

Customers raised the donation by purchasing $1 Red Cross squares at the participating restaurants.

Community Chapter Executive of the Red Cross, Shelley Bierwiler, said the money will be saved to help people in emergencies and disasters in the Southern Tier.

"We're an agency that is on call 24/7, year-round, whether it be for disaster response, like a single family fire, or if we do messaging for our military men and women that are overseas and need to get in contact and reach their families," Bierwiler said.

March was first proclaimed as Red Cross Month 70 years ago by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
