Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) As the weather conditions begin to look and feel a lot more like Christmas, it's important that traveling in the snow and ice is done safely.

Here's the safest tip: don't drive at all if you don't have to.

New York State Police always remind drivers that the most important tip to driving in winter weather is to slow down.

Snow and ice make roads slippery And especially with how heavy the snow is tonight limited visibility is going to be a problem.

If you plan to head out in the storm take some time to consider how important the trip really is.

"During this storm and right after it, you've really got to ask yourself, is this trip really necessary? Is this trip really working wrecking your guy, getting stuck in a ditch, getting hurt, getting killed, and if you're objective about it there's very few trips that really justify that risk," said Lt. Robert Croswell with the New York State Police.

It's also recommended to have snow tires on your car and to keep food and blankets in the car in case of an emergency.
