Woman Pronounced Dead Following Rescue from Susquehanna River

Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A woman rescued from the Susquehanna River Wednesday was pronounced dead at Wilson Hospital.

Vestal police identified her as Christine Mapes, 54, of Vestal.

First responders were called at 8:43 am to investigate a missing person complaint in the Castle Gardens neighborhood.

During a search of the area near Loretta Lane they found Mapes under the ice near the shore of the Susquehanna River.

Vestal police and firefighters were assisted by the Broome County Water Rescue team.

Mapes was pulled from the water and taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City where she was later pronounced dead.

The Vestal Police Department is still investigating how Mapes ended up in the water.

Vestal Police Chief John Butler said the circumstances surrounding Mapes death are not considered suspicious.
