Apalachin, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A Christmas Tree stand in Apalachin is closing in on their Facebook Challenge.
They said if they get 1,000 likes by Monday, they would give away dozens of trees to families in need in the area.
Big Dipper sells out every year, but they said they wanted to have some fun in the process this time around.
They started this Facebook Challenge last Friday, but at the end of the contest, they have a little less than 700 likes - 300 likes short of their goal.
"We don't need an arm and a leg for a fresh cut tree," said Paul Kapr of Big Dipper Christmas Tree Stand. "What we want to do is we want to provide everyone that we possibly can with a tree."
Between the three stands they have across the area, they sell around 1,500 trees a year, but not all families can afford a $40 tree to have in their home.
Kapr said even though they didn't reach their goal of 1,000, they will still give away 50 trees on Christmas Eve.
"To see a family light up and to get a tree that they can't afford to be able to have a Christmas celebration, that's what it's all about," said Kapr.
At 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, families who can't afford a tree can head over to the Big Dipper Christmas Tree Stand in Apalachin to pick up their tree.
Giving away trees isn't anything new for Big Dipper. Kapr said every year they give away trees in secret. They've already given away 25 this year to families in need.
He said if any families didn't get a tree this year and they don't get one during the giveaway, send Big Dipper a Facebook message by Christmas Eve and they'll do what they can to help.
