Joan L. Van Winkle ~


Joan L. Van Winkle, of Kirkwood passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2010. She is predeceased by her husband, Lt. George Van Winkle; sister, Betty Thurston; brother, Bud Owens; daughter, Victoria L. Borovicka; son, Lt. Colonel Henry G. Van Winkle; and nephew, Robert Thurston. She is survived by her sons, George R. and Barbara Van Winkle, Vestal, Leon and Joan M. Van Winkle, Conklin, Bradley Van Winkle, Kirkwood; son-in-law, Mark Borovicka, Kirkwood; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Van Winkle, Jacksonville FL; brother-in-law and gambling partner, Howard Thurston; grandchildren, Major Roderick and Tonya Van Winkle, Colorado, Christopher Van Winkle, Vestal, Jodie Van Winkle and Ron Henry, Kirkwood, Dr. Heather Van Winkle and Dr. Walter Homayoon, Long Island, Amy and Lt. Michael Culler, Conklin, Amanda and Kevin Alexandres, Colorado, Jennifer Van Winkle, Arizona, Mark H. and Megan Borovicka, Kirkwood, Griffin and Grant Van Winkle, Jacksonville, FL, John and Dolly Borovicka, Endwell, Julie Filho, Endwell, Kim and Livio Michitti, Johnson City, NY; 22 great grandchildren and her companions, Lucky, Noah, and Snuggles. Joan's greatest passion in life was her family, extended family and friends. Joan was an avid reader who loved her vast library of cook books. She was a great cook and enjoyed preparing holiday dinners for her family and friends. Joan accepted her illness with strength. Joan would like to thank the Hospice nurses and her caring physicians and staff, Dr. Joan Adler, Dr. Leonard Anderson, Dr. Ronald Harris, Dr. Peter Lofaso, Dr. R. Ramanujian and Dr. Lloyd E. Suter.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church, Main St., Kirkwood. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to the ALS Association Suite, 1020 Washington, DC 20005 or
