Thomas F. "Tommy" McCarthy


Thomas F. "Tommy" McCarthy passed on his 89th birthday, January 5, 2011 at the Elizabeth Church Manor after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Virginia Larsen McCarthy; fours sons, Tom N. McCarthy and his wife, Mary Anne, Dick McCarthy and his wife, Sandra, Bill McCarthy and his wife, Beth, Jim McCarthy and his wife, Susan; a daughter, Mary McCarthy; three grandchildren, Thomas Morgan McCarthy and his wife Erin, Annmarie (Beth) McCarthy, Matt McCarthy; a great granddaughter, Abaigeal McCarthy; his brother-in-law and his wife, Richard and Betty Larsen; two stepsisters, Mrs. Robert (Gladys) DelRaso, Ethel Donavan and a brother-in-law, Maurice Trusler, many nieces, nephews, a special friend, Nancy Button and "the best dog in the world" Penny. Tommy was devoted husband, loving and supportive father and grandfather and a dear friend to many. He will be forever missed. Tommy was the owner and operator of Tommy's Hairstylists in Binghamton for fifty-three years. He was an avid sportsman enjoying, golfing, skiing, fishing, motorcycle riding and was a marathon runner. He was an Army Veteran of WII serving in the European Theatre. He was a past Grand Knight for the Binghamton Knights of Columbus and worked for many years with the Binghamton Optimist Club with the Fresh Air Fund. A celebration of Tommy's life will be held on Saturday morning at 11:30am at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton with Pastor Janet Abel, Chaplin of Elizabeth Church Manor, officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 9am til 11:30am. In lieu of flowers kindly consider contributing in Tommy's memory to either the Alzheimer's Association or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff at Elizabeth Church Manor for their compassionate care given to Tommy.
