John "Hammer" Hamzik, 91, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Susquehanna Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Sigler) Hamzik; his parents, Michael & Anna (Macko) Hamzik; an infant brother, George; 6 siblings, Joseph and George Hamzik, Mary Goodwin, Anna Martin, Alvina Stolarcyk and Margaret Zack; also his son-in-law, Ted Mills. He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Hamzik) Mills, Dallas, TX.; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Cheryl Hamzik, Endwell; 4 grandchildren, Scott Mills, Chicago, IL, Kristin Mills, Denver, CO, Matthew Hamzik and Kate Hamzik, both of Endwell. He is also survived by several generations of nieces, nephews and their families; and his extended family, the caretakers at Susquehanna Nursing Home. Hammer could often be seen with his golf partner of over 50 years, Joe Kovarik, Sr., and another good friend, Al Pudish, at their favorite First Ward watering holes arguing about everything and trying to solve world problems. John was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity and its Nocturnal Adoration Society. He attended Woodrow Wilson School and Binghamton Central High School. He was a US Navy veteran of WW 2, and served aboard the USS Texas during the invasion of Normandy; he was also a member of the VFW. John was a retired employee of GAF Corp., and was the leader of a jazz band, playing saxophone and the clarinet. His hobbies included golf, listening to big band music, the New York Yankees and the New York Giants.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, November 3, at the Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc., 96 Glenwood Ave., Binghamton and at 9:30 AM at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 346 Prospect St., Binghamton, where a Funeral Mass will be offered. Burial will be in Slovak Catholic Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 PM on Friday, November 2, at the funeral home.
