Betty J. DeCator, 90, of Newark Valley passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012. Mrs. DeCator was born in Owego, NY to the late Howard and Eva Somers. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Francis W. DeCator; sister, Virginia Lunn Ferry. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Linda DeCator; grandchildren, Shelley Bell and David J. DeCator; great grandchildren, Camden and Kennidy Dyea-DeCator; sister, Mary Jane Soules; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty grew up on a farm in Tioga County and married Francis DeCator in 1940. They lived for 47 years in Owego. She enjoyed music and played the piano and guitar when she was younger. She and Francis performed in the fundraising Minstrel Shows to benefit the Owego Schools in the 1950's. Betty worked for and retired from IBM in Owego and was an active member of the Owego United Methodist Church and other community affairs, such as Boy Scouts. After retirement she and Francis belonged to many senior citizen groups and enjoyed traveling to various destinations throughout the U.S., including a trip to Hawaii. In recent years she lived with her son and daughter-in-law who cared for her. Betty will be best remembered by her family and friends for her kindness and generosity.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego with the Rev. Alan Jagger officiating. Burial will follow in the Tioga Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Betty DeCator's memory to the Owego United Methodist Church, 261 Main St., Owego, NY 13827 or a charity of one's choice.
