Marlene A. Freitag
Marlene A. Freitag, 78, passed away in her Owego home on Sunday morning, January 6, 2013 with family by her side. Marlene was diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2011, and showed great strength and courage in dealing with the disease. She is survived by Carl H. Freitag, her husband of nearly 59 years and loving friend for 64 years. Together they raised six children, Carlynne Freitag, Cindy Freitag-Hall, Cathy Burnett, Chris English, Carl R. Freitag, and Curt Freitag, and were blessed with three wonderful sons-in-law, Doug Hall, Michael Burnett, and Dale English. She deeply loved her 9 grandchildren and just welcomed her third great-grandson in December. Marlene is also survived by many extended family members, her brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Janice Swanson of Sussex, Wisconsin, numerous nieces and nephews, and members of Carl's family. Many friends and neighbors in Owego and Tallahassee will miss her as well. Marlene will be remembered as having a kind word for everyone, for her beautiful smile, and her lifelong dedication to children. She lived a life for children, from her own 6 children, along with their neighborhood friends and classmates in Owego, and later when she received a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Elmira College. She was employed as a Montessori teacher in Owego, later serving as the Director of the Tioga County Head Start program. Marlene taught computer classes at Ruediger Elementary School while residing in their Florida home in Tallahassee. In Tallahassee, she also assisted the primary grade teachers implement new technology in their classrooms. Marlene loved receiving cards and flowers, watching HGTV, and following Duke basketball. The entire Duke schedule was recorded on her refrigerator calendar. She was a tech-savvy Grandma, having her own cell phone to text her grandchildren, and was on Facebook! Marlene was a devout Christian, having been confirmed at Salem Evangelical Lutheran church in Milwaukee, WI. She was a regular and attentive parishioner at Zion Lutheran Church in Owego, NY. She had many friends in her other congregations, Grace Lutheran in Vestal, NY, and Epiphany Lutheran in Tallahassee, FL.
A Memorial Service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 3917 Waverly Road, Owego, NY on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Aaron Schian officiating. Her family will be available for calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, 3670 Waverly Road, Owego, NY on Thursday, January 10, 2013 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., and at Zion Lutheran Church on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. prior to the Memorial Service.
