Esther C. Leonard, 89, of Berkshire, passed peacefully away on Monday, August 5, 2013. Esther is survived by her loving and devoted husband of almost 70 years, Max L. Leonard; her son, William L. Leonard; and daughter, Sue (Dr. Duane) Dunnewold. Also surviving are her cherished grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Leonard, Shari Jackson, Julia Leonard, Katrina Betz, Ryan Dunnewold; her 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Emma (Neuendorf) Douvier; siblings, Francis Hitchcock, Dorothy Arnold, Warren and Louis Douvier; and grandson, Dan Leonard. Esther was a devoted member of the East Berkshire United Methodist Church. She worked alongside Max on the farm for many years and also assisted him with their maple syrup business. Following their retirement from farming, they enjoyed traveling throughout the country and notably were able to visit every state.
Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley. A Celebration of Her Life and Funeral Service will follow there at 12 noon with Rev. Dan Martin, longtime family friend, officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire.
