Anna Mapes will be the first to tell you, swimming is not her best sport... Running is.
She's a two-time state qualifier in indoor track, but that hasn't stopped her from helping Lansing's swim team to conference and section titles five years in a row.
So it should come as no surprise that she's not afraid of a little hard work.
Mapes says, "I really like the feeling after you're done with a really hard practice because you feel really accomplished and you can tell that it's good for your body."
Early mornings and late evenings in the pool don't leave a lot of time for other things... Unless you have Anna's work ethic.
She's 5th in her class with a 95 average and also a leader in her youth group.
"Being on teams I think helps me a lot with school because I don't have as much time as other people and so I have to budget it and so just coming home from practice and getting my homework done is my priority and then hanging out with my family and stuff too, I guess."
Anna's just the latest member of her family to star in the pool.
Both her older sisters competed for the Bobcats and her 9th-grade sister's been pulled in too.
It would do her good to follow Anna's example.
Her principal Michelle Brantner says, "She's also just a fantastic role model. Someone that you would want your children to be like. She's very caring of others and is always looking out for other people and taking care of other people."
Setting the standard with hard work and dedication, that's what makes Anna Mapes this week's Academic All Star.
