Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Some of the best high school basketball players in the state will descend on Johnson City this weekend. They'll be traveling to play in the annual BCANY Summer Hoops Festival, which starts Friday.
Players from across Section IV will team up to represent the Southern Tier, and for many they'll be playing together for the first time.
The Southern Tier is one of eight sections fielding a team this weekend. It's chance for them to test their skills against some of the states best players.
"From a competitive standpoint you know that you are getting the best of each section," said coach Bill Ocker. "For the kids to get outside the box a little bit and see what basketball is like in other parts of the state I think is very important to improve individually from a program standpoint, as well as from a sectional standpoint."
"It's a great competition you get to see what's out there in the rest of the state a lot of exposure," said Elmira Notre Dame senior Darius Garvin. "A lot of coaches there. I mean it's fun to represent the section and just show what Section IV is about."
The event also serves as a way for players to get recruited.
It kicks off Friday, with the Southern Tier boys playing at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. All games are at Johnson City high school, middle school or elementary school.
