Stony Brook, NY (WBNG Binghamton)

Stony Brook (14-7, 9-1 AE) exploded out of the gate to the tune of a 35-point halftime lead and defeated Binghamton (0-22, 0-10 AE) 82-48 Wednesday night from Pritchard Gym. The Seawolves drilled a school-record 14 three-pointers (14-of-26) to remain unbeaten on their home floor (11-0).

“We didn’t come out with fire and they shot the ball very well,” head coach Mark Macon said of the pivotal first half. “We dug in and played much better in the second half but they hit all those threes in the first half and that was the game.”

The Bearcats hit 3-of-6 to start the game and were tied 6-6 four minutes into the contest before the wheels came off. Stony Brook rattled off three-pointers on five straight possessions to begin an overwhelming 35-7 run that spanned 12:41. During the run, the Seawolves drilled 13-of-19 from the floor, including 8-of-11 accuracy from beyond the arc. With the Bearcats struggling on the offensive end (3 FG in final 16 minutes), Stony Brook outscored BU 44-9 to end the half and when Anthony Jackson’s three from the top of the key swished through with two seconds left, the hosts had built a 50-15 bulge.

The Seawolves drilled 9-of-12 from three-point range in the first half, including eight in a 10-minute span midway through the period. Stony Brook shot 61 percent and held the Bearcats to 6-of-21 shooting (29%).

Binghamton shot 44 percent in the second half and outscored the hosts 33-32 over the final 20 minutes but the damage was done.

For the game, sophomore guard Rob Mansell led the Bearcats with 10 points. Freshman forward Ben Dickinson added nine points and junior guard Jimmy Gray chipped in eight points, four steals and three assists.
