Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) En-Joie Golf Club's head pro, Mike Deuel, is one of 312 golf pros heading to Myrtle Beach to play in the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship.
Deuel, who plays to about a plus-two handicap, went to the national championship four times in the 1990s. In his best effort, he finished around 50th place.
But this year he'll take his family down for the week, play a little golf, and let his game take care of itself.
"It is a treat to go down there," he said. "Us club professionals, this is our national championship, so we really look forward to going down to this event. I'm excited to go, I'm excited to spend some time with my family away in the summer, which I've never been able to do, at least in the last 10 years. I'm really looking forward to it, it is tough to make."
The tournament takes place June 22-25 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club and the Grande Dunes Resort Club. The Dunes Golf & Beach Club will serve as the primary host course in the National Championship, including the final 36 holes. All contestants will compete the first two rounds on The Dunes and Grande Dunes Resort Club.
The event has two cuts, from 312 to 90 players after the first two round, down to 60 for the final round.
The event's top 20 finisher will advance to the PGA Championship in Louisville, KY. in early August.
