Greene coach hangs up the whistle
Greene, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Family, friends and colleagues gathered to say goodbye to a man who spent 35 years behind the bench in Greene. Steve Burghardt is retiring at the end of the year from teaching and coaching. He spent 35 years coaching baseball for the Trojans, winning more than 300 games in his career. Burghardt also coached the basketball team. After leaving coaching to watch his children, he went back to Greene as the modified baseball coach. He said it was the kids that made his 35 years in charge memorable. "We have a lot of pictures around here of the games we remember and there's certain things you always remember, certain kids you can remember," said Burghardt. "You can remember the kids when you're four wins a season just as many as 20 wins a season just as long as they're trying hard and that's what it always is, teaching and everything is for the kids." Burghardt said while he's officially retiring, he won't be able to stay away for long, adding he'll find time between tasks on his to do list to still be around for the baseball teams.
