Harpursville, NY (WBNG Binghamton)

A year ago the Harpursville girls basketball team can one game shy of a state title.
And by most accounts that's where the story ended.

Lost to graduation was the leading scorer in section 4 basketball history, but this year's Hornets are showing there is life after Kimmel. We explain in this week's action sports spotlight.

" When you lose a dominant player, someone else is going to have to step in and fill those spots. They've done a really good job of that this year."

They aren't necessarily better without Hannah Kimmel. But then, they're not necessarily any worse.
Any team would need to adjust after losing a 30-point a game scorer. But these Hornets haven't missed a beat, as their #1 ranking in class "C" will attest to.

Senior Kayleigh Livermore says, " I thought we would be better than expected because people thought losing Hannah we weren't going to be that good, but I honestly never expected we would be 14-0 and ranked #1 in the state. My expectations were not that high."

Coach Kurt Ehrnsbeck says, " We have 5 people working together really well. They all know where each other should be and they work together and that seems to trigger our offense. "

They all say this season has been fun. Compared to the pressure cooker of the sectional and state tournament, even late season conference games have a relaxed feel.
But if they're looking for motivation, they all say getting back into that pressure cooker is all they care about.

" That is ultimately our goal. We want to reach as high as we did last year. I think we have it in us, and I think we all know that. "
" I think teamwork and belief, and we really wanted this. So we believe in ourselves and we've come this far...."
