Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton)
Four members of the Binghamton University's wrestling team are now less than a day away from beginning their run at individual NCAA Titles. For Nate Schiedel, like his fellow senior Donnie Vinson, this is one last shot at NCAA glory.
Schiedel is a four-year NCAA Tournament qualifier, and this year enters the tournament as the seventh seed at 197 lbs. That means Nate is stepping up a weight class for his final season, as he previously wrestled at 184 lbs the last three years.
If experience has taught him anything during the past few trips to the N-C-A-A Tournament it's that you can't be too worried with who is winning and losing around you.
"A lot of crazy things happen at the national tournament, guys get caught up in looking who they'll have in the next round and some guys will get upset," said Schiedel. "Guys aren't going to win that are supposed to, and then you get caught up in that and it can play a factor."
Schiedel starts off his tournament against unseeded Connor Hartman of Duke, who finished third in the ACC Tournament.
For Binghamton's junior Cody Reed, this is just his second straight NCAA Tournament, but he's looking to build on last year's experience. Last year, Reed beat the four seed in his first match of the tournament, something he'll look to duplicate as he faces the sixth seed, Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa, tomorrow in the opening round.
Some more good news for Reed is he actually already wrestled Loder, losing 3-0 earlier this season. Despite the loss, he's excited about the match-up.
"I'm definitely excited about the match-up, you know wrestling the kid earlier this year and having a close match with him so I know what to expect," said Reed. "Coach has prepared me well and we're going through game plans, so I just have to go out there and be ready for it and hopefully come out with a good outcome."
Reed and the rest of the BU wrestlers begin their run at NCAA Titles Thursday, as the tournament begins at noon.
