Vestal (WBNG BINGHAMTON) In the fall, the Vestal's field hockey team won a Section IV championship; advanced to the Class B state semi-finals; set a school record for most wins in a season with 17; and set another school record for most consecutive wins with 16. Leading the charge were 4 seniors who all made their college choices together Monday.
After spending not just high school but most of their lives playing together, now Emily Barnard, Diana Ruggerio, Tori-Jo Kakusian and Olivia Landry all go their separate ways to play in college. Monday was a chance to celebrate all they've done together.
"This year was a fantastic year, definitely one I'll remember. It will go down in history not only in school, but with the kids we played with. We made it farther than anyone ever has," said Kakusian, who will attend Marywood University to study criminal justice.
"There's no words for it. I played with all these girls since rec league. Really, this is our last moment together and it couldn't be more perfect," Barnard said. She will attend Shippensburg University and major in mathematics.
"All season, we knew it was coming and dreading it because I've never played with anyone but these girls," said Ruggiero, who will attend SUNY Geneseo to study psychology. "It's been really weird to think that we're not going to be on the field together anymore, but I'm still really excited to see how they do on their new teams."
"It's going to be hard not to play with them anymore, but I know they'll do great things," added Landry. She will attend Clark University to also study psychology.
