HE'S BEEN TOUGH TO CATCH ON THE TRACK AND EQUALLY TOUGH TO CATCH IN THE CLASSROOM. NEWARK VALLEY SENIOR JAMIE VAVRA IS THE TWO-TIME DEFENDING SECTION CHAMP AND A THREE-TIME WINNER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS HICKORIES INVITATIONAL, YET STILL FINDS TIME TO KEEP A 96 AVERAGE.
Coach Eric D'Arcy says,"He's definitely one of the great ones. Probably the best we've ever had at Newark Valley at this point in terms of boy runners. Very great kid to coach, great kid to be around."
JAMIE TOOK SEVENTH AT LAST YEAR'S STATE MEET BUT HARDLY WAS SATISFIED WITH THE TOP-10 FINISH, WHICH IS WHY HE'S TRAINED HARDER THAN HE'S EVER TRAINED BEFORE WITH A FIRST-PLACE FINISH IN HIS SIGHTS.
Vavra says, "I did a lot of training over the summer. Pushed the mileage to the max that I've ever done before. It really helped me turn it on this year and push the times. I came on real strong and that's been helping me through the season."
HIS INDIVIDUAL AWARDS ARE TOO NUMEROUS TO LIST, BUT EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE IS HIS LEADERSHIP. NOT ONLY AS THE SENIOR CLASS TREASURER, BUT AS CAPTAIN OF THE CARDINALS NUMBER-ONE RANKED TEAM THAT SWEPT THE FIRST FIVE SPOTS AT LAST WEEK'S SECTION MEET.
"He's been a great leader since day one first practice, actually during the summer when the team was running, he was great about making sure everyone was getting there, making sure everyone was putting in the extra effort."
JAMIE'S NEVER SHIED AWAY FROM EXTRA EFFORT WHICH HELPS MAKE HIM THIS WEEK'S ACADEMIC ALL STAR. IN NEWARK VALLEY, JUSTIN HOROWITZ, ACTION SPORTS.
