Even if it does say Me on the wall, Mike Harris isn't wrestling for himself.
He's doing it as part of the team at Maine-Endwell
"The team is really important to me," Mike says. "It takes a lot to get and win a match. It's tough sometimes but we do our best."
Mike is one of the Spartan senior leaders, a role his coach says he fills very well.
"He's not the rah-rah type, he will lead by example," says Coach Bob Maraski. "He will push himself and others on the run to make sure they're doing the workout they need to. You don't see him resting in practice. He will push himself to the limit as well as make those around him excel their game just to keep up with him."
His fellow classmates would be wise to watch him work in the books.
Mike is an "A" student, with eyes at becoming an architect someday.
His coach sees that same technical eye to detail in Mike's work on the mat.
" It's really helped him this season, adjusting to his opponents in a tournament very quickly. Where maybe you only have 45 minutes or an hour to get ready for your next opponent, he's watched their match and has prepared himself that quickly for the next match. "
There may be no I in team, but here there is an M-E. That's the team Mike Harris leads by example as this week's academic all star.
In Endwell, Brendan O'Reilly, action sports.
