There's no question Cierra Hartwell is a leader.
Her classmates no doubt follow her lead as she keeps up a 97 average in her studies.
But on the volleyball court, she does much more than just lead by example.
Cierra says, " I guess it's easier because they're my friends, not just a random group of girls. So I can be like, 'You have to be right there. I'll be up front so that means you have to be right behind me.' It works well because we work so well as a team."
Coach Pam Tompkins says, " If you're the captain on my team you have a job, it's not just there so you can go over and talk with the officials. You have to lead. You have to set the example. She does it very pleasantly because she's always positive in what she tells the girls. If they have a question they know they can come and talk to her."
An extra coach on the floor, Cierra has her sights set on being a coach. And more importantly, a teacher.
" You can always be a role model if you're a teacher. And on the volleyball court it's the same thing. You lead the rest of the girls. My coach always says that talking all the time, telling them where to be. They don't ever take it the wrong way, it always that I'm helping them out."
Right now she's leaning towards teaching math.
" Everything else comes easy if you know how to do calculus, you can pretty much deal with life."
It may not always be easy, but Cierra Hartwell makes it look that way.
That's why she's this week's academic all star.
