Neel Lalkiya is so dedicated to his schoolwork that he nearly forgot about our interview honoring him as the Academic All Star. You see, he was at an AP European History review session.
"I don't usually stay after for review sessions because they don't help me that much. I do it better alone but my teacher's really good in AP Euro," Neel says.
But Neel's hardly just a bookworm. He's part of the Golden Bears undefeated number one doubles team in just his first year in the varsity lineup. The key to his success is his playing partner, fellow sophomore and good friend, Shane Regan.
"Shane's really good. We make a great team. We've been friends for a while so it kind of helps," says Neel.
"It's just great to play with him. He's also really smart in school and any time I need help with school work I can go to Neel and he always knows the answer," says Shane.
Lucky for Shane, Neel's a walking encyclopedia, because AP European History is hardly his only tough subject.
"I also take IB Chem which that was a long test. I just came back from an organic chem test, really big," says Neel.
With a backpack full of those textbooks, Neel might be an easy target for some good-natured teasing from his good buddy, right?
"Occasionally, but he's got like a 100 in every class so he can always come back with that I'm not as good," says Shane.
Luckily, they're a perfect match on the court and that helps Neel Lalkiya to be this week's Academic All Star.
