There is no separation between being smart and running fast for Johnson city junior Jeff Martinez.
Which makes the advice he received at a recent training camp all the more valuable.
Jeff says, " Beat all the runners you are better than and then beat half the runners that are better than you because they will run a stupid race. That's really stuck with me."
It's also inspiration to maintain his A average and move up in the class rankings.
" In school I know there are some kids that are smarter than me, but I try to move past them."
His specialty is running cross county in the fall and distance races in the spring.
" A lot of people like to run, just to clear their mind. If something's bothering me, I just go run 4 or 5 miles."
This past week Jeff got his drivers lisence, and was proud to point out his new ride in the parking lot.
But it's his running that's taking him places, starting with this week's academic all star.
