If you follow section 4 basketball, you likely know the name Craig Champlin.
The Oxford high school senior is among the top scorers in the area, averaging better than 20 points a game.
But to really know his story is to know someone who is more than just a basketball player.
And one that is very deserving of this week's academic all star.
" This year I kind of took the reins and filled the role that was missing on the team. "
Stepping up into a leadership role is nothing new for Oxford senior Craig Champlin.
His work in the class ranks him among the top-10 in his class, and what free time he has he spends volunteering at the Veterans home or at soup kitchens.
That work ethic has had him focussed on acceptance into the United States Military academy at west point. And after 5 years of work, the call came from congressman Michael Arcuri.
" A couple of weeks later actually call me himself and told me that I received the appointment. That was the best feeling in my life that day was. It was a really really long process. I spent a week down there over the summer and I was pretty much the deciding factor for me it was like a day in the life. 5:30 AM bagpipes to wake you up, PT, I love it. "
The work he put in to receive that appointment is similar to what he's done on the basketball court to grow from a role player to THE MAN.
" I think a lot of people see the stats in the box score in the paper and it earlier to realize how hard of a worker he is in the classroom. How much he dedicates himself to life outside of basketball. "
A few weeks ago he said he'd like to leave his mark by winning the schools first MAC title in basketball.
Last weekend Craig Champlin did just that.
A leader on the court, in the class and in life, Craig Champlin is this week's academic all star.
