The fact that Nicole Vavra is so good at this makes this .....Even easier.
Her goal oriented mindset from the classroom helps her conquer the toughest of jobs on the basketball court.
" If we need her to play some tenacious defense on a top scorer, she's done that for us," says coach Norm Szwec. "She shut down the top 2 scorers in the I-A-C. She held one to 14 and the other to 4, those were both great defensive efforts."
Nicole says, " He usually calls my job an 'assignment'. He says, " OK, this is your assignment, you're going to guard this player," and that's how I look at basketball. That's actually my favorite part is playing defense, there's no greater feeling than trying to stop the other team from scoring."
She's an individual standout on the volleyball court, named to the state all tournament team this year, but her willingness to play defense shows it's always team first.
" This year we have a really good team, and we work together really well, and it's just really fun to go out there and play."
Her coach says she not only out plays her opponents, she out thinks them.
Easy to do for a future math major carrying a 97 average, among the top 5 in her class.
That comes from the same amount of hard work she puts in on the court, and what makes Nicole Vavra this week's academic all star.
