" The thing I like more is being really competitive, and it's really like, there's no down time, and you're always moving and I like doing that. "
That's how Kaitlyn Harris describes the basketball season, but it could just as easily describe her academic work, as she competes to keep up a 94 average with a very busy schedule.
" Well, I go to calculus and then to AP Bio. And I need to find time to do all my homework because I get it all done during the school day mostly. During my studyhalls I stay in during school, and I go home and do my homework again after practice. "
Despite playing field hockey through to the state championship game, and lacing up her basketball shoes for a scrimmage before ever getting to practice, it's her energy and leadership that make her so valuable on the hardwood.
" Being a senior and being an all state selection in field hockey and softball, she's obviously an accomplished athlete, and I think the other kids are just looking for her to set the tone, set the pace and to just, you know what, pick us up. "
" You don't automatically step up and become a leader. It's something you have to get through and get over being able to tell someone what to do, and when you're ready to do it."
She'll study biology next year at Mansfield, where her sports season will be limited to just softball.
For now she stays busy in the class and on the court, and excels at both.
It's why Kaitlyn Harris is this week's academic all star.
