This week's Academic All Star forgot to say one thing during his interview... Hi Mom.

Besides that, Owego Free Academy junior Jake Pickett does just about everything right on the lacrosse field and in the classroom.

That's why he's this week's Academic All star.

Here's Justin Horowitz.

"I don't talk too much. I think you do your talking through your work and through your hitting," Jake Pickett says.

You might say Owego junior Jake Pickett is a throw back.
His success is a product of natural ability mixed with a healthy dose of old-fashioned hard work.

"A lot of my work ethic came from my dad. He pushed me hard when I was younger and when I grew up I just wanted to keep pushing harder and get bigger and get stronger, get faster," says Pickett.

"His work ethic is impeccable. He's a leader by example and kind of a soft-spoken kid, but someone that you want to have on your side," says Owego Head Coach Brian Kinney.

The Indians are off to a 4 and 0 start and have allowed only 10 goals with Jake anchoring the defense.

"I played baseball before, but I said, you know I'm going to try lacrosse so I went to that and started playing with everybody I knew and I got hooked on it," say Pickett.

On this day, Jake's learning about waves in Regents Physics.

He's made high honor roll every year and plans to study engineering in college.

His coach says Jake's upbeat attitude makes him stand out, even more than the mohawk he's been sporting since last year.

"When I look at Jake, I don't know that he ever has a bad day. He always has a smile on his face. Yesterday, the temperate was probably 22 degrees, raining, it was just a cross wind and he's smiling," says Kinney.

"I'm a laid-back guy. Whenever I'm under stress or under pressure, I just say you know what, it's just life, just smile," says Pickett.

Smiling all the way while out-working his competition.

That old-school approach is what makes Jake Pickett this week's Academic All Star.
