Newark Valley, NY (WBNG Binghamton)

Her coach calls her the ideal student athlete.
Her classmates call her miss President and her teammates call her captain.

Now Newark Valley senior Nicole Watson has a new name.

She's this week's academic all star.

" Leadership comes very naturally to me..."

That's both as a softball player, and a student athlete.
Newark Valley's Nicole Watson hits the books to keep up an average in the 90's and does everything she can to keep improving on the field.

coach Scott Wandell says, " Her competitiveness on the field is exactly how she is in the classroom. Her compassion and her citizenship in how great she is with her teammates is exactly how she is in the community and in the school community."

Nicole says, " I'm competing for class rank, and on the field, everything I do is going out to give my best, both on the field and in the classroom."

Her hard work is more than practice and homework.

Nicole is also the student council president, helping to lead major fundraising efforts.

And this is her 5th year as the team's catcher, earning her extra responsibilities.

" She's the first catcher I've ever had that can call pitches on her own sometimes. I trust her to call pitches because she does it so well and she's so intelligent."

" When I'm calling a game I'm definitely a lot more focussed into the game, and a lot more into the game than when someone else is giving me the pitches. I love calling the game, it definitely brings my focus way more into the game."

She's focused, on her studies, her game, and a whole lot more.
That's why Nicole Watson is this week's academic all star.
