Candor, NY (WBNG Binghamton)
Candor senior Aubrie Russell isn't perfect.
But she's working on it.
Not just a leader in the classroom, she literally leads her team in afternoon runs around town.
and as Gabe Osterhout shows us, she runs away with this week's academic all star as well.
"That's what I do...I run and I try to run well."
Candor Senior Aubrie Russell has been running for the cross country team since 7th grade.
She says it was a gym teacher who suggested it to her after she ran 3 miles on the track and enjoyed herself.
Now, the senior is looking for her 5th consecutive trip to the state meet.
"I want to be remembered by other people in a good way."
"That I was their favorite student or I was somebody that made them smile on a bad day or I was their team person that they came to when they needed something."
That shouldn't be an issue.
Russell is the class vice president.
And has been the leader of the cross country team.
Something that's been a benefit to first year head coach Andy Carling.
"I have modified split and varsity. There are times I'm here with modified on school grounds, varsity goes out for a run on the roads. I can rely on her to make good decisions when they're out there and I trust that she would do that and keep a good eye on her teammates."
Russell is also an all-star in the classroom.
She carries a 96 average, and got a perfect score on the writing portion of her SATs.
But she'll tell you her favorite subject is biology and hopes to make a career of it.
She wants to go to a SUNY school to major in biology and possibly get a PHD.
And hopes to someday be a college professor or do research.
That's why Aubrie Russell is this week's Academic All-Star.
