A Chenango Forks senior loves chemistry in the classroom and on the track.
An honor roll student, and a role model for his teammates, he does it all.
Action Sports reporter Gabe Osterhout introduces us to James Allen, this week's Academic All-Star.
Athletic and academic achievements run in the Allen family.
Chenango Forks senior James Allen has followed his brother, a former academic all-star, with success in sports and in the classroom.
James says it's something he's been working for his whole life.
"It mean a lot to me. I feel like I've succeeded as an athlete and probably more importantly, I've succeeded in my studies. I've been working hard and this is what I've been working towards...to be a senior and graduating and proud of what I've been able to do at school."
And he's accomplished quite a bit.
He's one of the few members of the school's cross country hall of fame.
And is the leader of the track team, specializing in the mile run.
"The mile is a really fun race because it involves a ton of speed but its just long enough to involve some strategy too. It really gives me a chance to let loose but still use my brain to outsmart the competitors which you can't do in a shorter race."
Off the track, he's a competitor as well.
Allen carries an average in the upper 90s.
He says he loves science, especially biology and chemistry.
Coaches say he brings his love of chemistry to the track, where he sets an example for the other runners.
Coach Nick Groover says, "I think the thing he really brings to the table is he's not only a leader for us on the track, but he's a leader for us off the track with his academics and he's really a role model for the way kids should behave."
Allen hopes to continue helping people in college, possibly majoring in medicine.
He hopes to go to Georgetown, but says he's not ready to run in the Big East.
Instead, he'll probably join a club team.
And concentrate on his studies.
Nothing new for a senior who excells on and off the track.
And that's why James Allen is this week's Academic All-Star.
