Newark Valley, NY (WBNG Binghamton)
A Newark Valley senior is the student council vice president, and ranks 4th in her class.
And her athletic director says she's not only a team leader, but one of the most accomplished athlete's in schools history.
Action Sports reporter Gabe Osterhout introduces us to Jenna Cupp, this week's Academic All-Star.
"I put in so much work and I try my hardest in everything."
She's a 4 time all state runner.
A two time sectional champion and a three time team MVP.
Jenna Cupp is the unquestioned leader of the Newark Valley cross country team.
Not a bad resume, considering she thought about playing soccer in high school.
"One day we were talking and he was like Jenna, you're going to do cross country right? And I was like right...no, I'm too scared. I was too scared to say no so that's actually, Collin Darcy was the reason I got into cross country."
It's a decision she says is one of the best of her life.
She says running offers her a mental challenge, and gives her the satisfaction of accomplishing a goal.
Coaches say she's going to be very tough to replace when she graduates in June.
Coach Brian Trippany says, "Jenna is one of those athletes who has those intangibles. She has the inner drive, she has the motivation, she has the work ethic that's really incredible. She wants to do the right thing."
Inside the classroom, her hard work has also paid off.
She carries a 97 average, and ranks 4th in her senior class.
Cupp says her favorite subject is psychology because it helps to answer some of those unknown questions.
"Like how the human brain works and why it works the way it does. It's just really cool."
She says she hasn't made a decision on where she'll go to college, but she knows she wants to study health sciences.
And of course, she will continue her running career.
But for now, she's more worried about having a good season, and helping Newark Valley to their 8th straight sectional team title.
