Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton)

An Owego Free Academy junior is an all division athlete in three different sports.
During three different seasons.
Even with that busy schedule, he still has time for his school work.
Action Sports reporter Gabe Osterhout introduces us to this week's Mirabito Academic All Star, Stephen Yanchus.

Ask anyone associated with the Owego Free Academy baseball program and they'll tell you junior Stephen Yanchus is the leader of that team.
But you probably won't hear much from him.
He prefers to lead by example.

"I'm not really a vocal guy. I'm kind of quiet most of the time, so I've tried to be a little louder this year but I try to do my talking to kids behind the scenes.
His coach says the three year starter at shortstop may be one of the best baseball players that's ever come through Owego.
And he will be missed a great deal when he graduates next year.

Coach Ken Francisco says, "When he goes through on the ballfield, as soon as he crosses the lines, it's a different Stephen Yanchus. It's a kid that's focused. It's a kid that wants to win. It's a kid that leads by example. He does whatever he has to to make this team and program better."

Yanchus isn't just an all-star on the baseball field, he was also an all-division guard in basketball and an all-conference golfer.
On top of all the other activities, Yanchus still has time for his homework, though he admits its not easy.

He currently has a 99 average in school.
And has been a member of the high honor roll each marking period in his 3 year high school career.

"You have to get home, get your homework done right after practice. Sometimes practice can go til, during basketball 9:00, 9:30 and baseball sometimes 7, 8 o'clock. You have to get home, get your work done...not a lot of time to screw around."

Yanchus says his favorite subjects in school are English and mathematics.
His love for math may lead to his future career, as an engineer.
He hopes to engineer a title for the Owego Free Academy baseball team.
And that's why Stephen Yanchus is this week's Mirabito Academic All-Star.
