A serve with no return is an ace.
And when you get a score of 100 on a test, you might say you aced it.
So then there's Owego junior Tommy West, who gets plenty of both.
Gabe Osterhout introduces us to this week's academic all star.

Family is an important thing to Owego junior Tommy West.
His brothers got him into the sport of tennis when he was a little boy, and he's kept on playing through high school, where he's the team's number one singles player.
But that hasn't gone to his head at all.

"I just see myself as a part of the team. I mean number one singles counts the same as 3rd doubles so everyone contributes equally and I try to do my part to help my team win."

And win he's done this season, winning all but one match so far.
During his career, West has been named to the STAC all conference team.
Off the court, West excels as well, where he carries a 100 average.
He adds his favorite subject is chemistry.
Athletic Director Andrew Goodrich says West is the definition of a student athlete.

"He's a great example to all our student athletes and it really is a joy to have a young man who understands what being a true student athlete is about. I'm sure he'll continue to do that beyond OFA."

West hasn't chosen a college yet, but would again like to follow in his older brother's footsteps by going to Cornell.
Michigan and North Carolina are also in the running.
As for what he'd like to major in?

"Biology or chemistry or bio-chem which is the best of both worlds."

West admits tennis is his second focus, outside of his school work.
An inspiration to younger teammates, and a role model for student athletes, that's why Tommy West is this week's Academic All-Star.
