Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Jasmine Howard makes for one very happy track coach. That is because of her will to do her best, both on the track and in other parts of life.
"What drives me to succeed is just my desire to just improve at every track meet, which is my main goal," said Howard. "To try to improve as much as I can."
Originally Howard just picked up winter track as a way to stay in shape for lacrosse, but this year she made a full-time commitment. Immediately she became one of the most successful runners on the Binghamton team, and now she continues to get better every day.
"Jasmine came out for track and became one of the top three sprinters in the section," said Matt Sheehan, the BHS track coach. "At the same time she has scored three-times the amount of points anyone on this team has. She also brings a smile every day and never complains."
Off the track, she's part of the National Honors Society while holding a 98 average. On it, her goal is to qualify for the State meet this year as a sprinter, and go after multiple school records. The combination of those two have her looking to follow in the footsteps of former Academic All-Star Abbie Bideaux, who she says she looks up to.
"I would love to follow in her footsteps and go to Cornell," Howard said. "That's my dream school."
Her coach believes it's a possibility if she continues to improve, but she's made the cut as this week's Academic All-Star.
