Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Chenango Forks senior Mike Diekow is a four-year member of the varsity swim team, who carries nearly a 95 GPA, but there's even more to him.

"I'd say butterfly because it's probably I think the most difficult stroke, and it looks cool."

Diekow's favorite stroke, tells you a lot about him.

"Swimming is the thing you hate and you love, but really it's the hard work you put into it," he said. "It shows when you race. So it's the satisfaction you get when you race well."

Mike's the type of athlete that enjoys a challenge, which is what drew him to swimming six years ago. Back then though it was about as tough as it gets.

"I think one of the things that comes to mind about Mike is perseverance," said coach Jon Edwards. "The first couple weeks he was that kid who could barely keep his head above water. Now he's competitive at the highest level of the sport, so perseverance, sticking with it and getting the job done."

That's right, when Mike started with the Chenango Forks modified swim team, he could barely swim. That attitude and work ethic are the same things that pushed him to "dive" on into a different challenging venture.

"I just find history and money very interesting," Diekow said. "I invest a lot now...in the stock market."

Entering the unknown world of investing could be intimidating for most other 17-year-old high school students. But when it comes to Diekow, it's become a common theme. It's just like when he dove into the water six years ago.

"It can be intimidating, especially when in that first meet or two you're up against someone who has been doing it for five or six years," said Edwards. "It can be disheartening, but it's a testament to the kids who stick it out and really put in the time and the yards. They see the results."

That's why Mike Diekow is this week's Academic All-Star.
