Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton)

When his team needed him most, Binghamton senior Alex Palma stepped up, helping his Patriots win their first sectional title since 1999.
In class he takes the toughest course load available, and still keeps up an "A" average.
You put it together, and you have this week's academic all star.

" Alex is motivated, he wants to do big things..."

His career ambition is to be an architectural engineer, putting up buildings around the world.

For now though, Alex Palma is more concerned with knocking things down.
He's the top bowler for the Binghamton boys team, and has qualified for states for the second straight season.
But this year he also helped bring home a sectional title for the Patriots.

" The team hasn't won since 1999, so it was a big deal for us. We really wanted it."

" Alex has been a leader for the last few years. This is my first year as the bowling coach and he really did lead that team quite well. He was there answering questions and helping when I couldn't be there he was the one answering them. "
In class, Alex is a part of the International Baccalaureate program, with a work load that he says can mean some late nights.
He says it's worth it to get him prepared for college next year.
But he also uses that analytical side to make sure his bowling swing stays in line
" A lot of times if I'm struggling I have to take a step back and just figure out what am I doing wrong or what can I fix. So that helps me out a little bit. "
He looks to make a run at the state bowling meet next weekend. He'll still be bowling after that, when it fits into his busy study schedule.
But whether he's knocking them down or learning to build something big, Alex Palma is at the top of his game. It's why he's this week's academic all star.
