Walking through the hallways at Maine-Endwell is probably the only time you'll see Marie Ferro moving so slowly.

The senior is a distance specialist who competes in the 3000-meter run during track season and happily runs three or four mile-races during cross country in the fall.

"They say distance runners are a whole different breed, so, I just, I don't know, to me it just comes naturally," says Marie. "I just love doing it. To a lot of other people they think you're crazy. You ran 10 miles. What are you, insane!"

"She kind of attacks everything with a vengeance, I would say," says head coach Mike Cordi. "She's small, maybe five foot tall, she's lucky if she weighs 100 pounds, yet she's a monster athletically and then academically, she's the same way."

Marie carries a 98 average with a schedule that includes several AP courses.

Next year she'll attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany, with a major that shows off her wide-range of talents.

"I'm going to be studying something called product design and innovation and it's kind of a conglomeration of a whole bunch of different subjects because you're kind of designing your own products but then you have to be able to write about them so that's the english part, but then there's the science, you know, the mechanics, the engineering," says Marie.

Marie also finds time to play violin, and be a member of the International club, national honors society and a community service organization.

But the key to everything she does is running.

"When you go out on a run for 50 minutes or an hour, there's nothing except for you and your thoughts and it's just a great way for you to get everything out and just what you need to figure out," says Marie.
