Academic All Star - Ethan Farabaugh

Whether it's in AP Biology...

"Ethan, what was the purpose of cleavage?

"To split the cells into two... and to make them smaller, yes, very good."

Or on the baseball field, Owego senior Ethan Farabaugh is a student-athlete with many talents.

Especially when it comes to science and raising baby chickens.

"That's a fun class," says Ethan. "We actually got those in a few weeks ago and they just started hatching a few days ago. I think we have 12 of them now and they're a lot of fun. You just put them on your desk and they run around and chirp at you."

Ethan plans to take his science and math acumen to Penn State next year to study engineering.

But first, there's a matter of his final high school baseball season.

Ethan's what you can call a utility player, no one position is enough to keep him busy.

In fact, Ethan doesn't really have a position, he plays them all.

"Last year I did a little bit of catching, third base, shortstop, second base, I think I played every position last year, pitched, center field, everywhere pretty much," says Ethan.

"We can put him at any position and he will do a great job at all of his positions," says head coach Ken Francisco. "The only kid I've ever had to play nine positions on the team and do them all very well."

So it's easy to see why Ethan is one of the team's most valuable players and its leader.

Besides setting the standard with a 97 grade point average, he takes his role as captain very seriously.

He doesn't say a whole lot, but strives to be an example for future Indian players.

"I think they really look up to me because of my leadership skills and that's important because they're going to be the ones taking over the team in the future so they need to learn from someone and I try to do the best I can."

And his best effort is good enough to be this week's Academic All Star.
