Action Sports Spotlight - Could Corning Classic Continue?

By Brendan O'Reilly

After the final round Sunday, tournament president Jack Benjamin was addressing the assembled crowd at the 18th green when a chant started to drown him out.
It was the fans shouting "one more year!"
Well that won't be next year, but could the tournament be back soon after? {} That's the big question to be answered in this week's action sports spotlight.

I've been doing this for quite a long time and you always talk about what you do next year. Well next year is not in the cards.

The tournament certainly does leave on a high note. This year they boast of their best attendance, exceeding the year Annika Sorenstam won here in Corning.
That of course leaves the fans of the three decade old event asking for one more year.

Everybody wants more. That's a great feeling to be expressed. Unfortunately the economics don't work right now.

Not right now but perhaps somewhere down the line. With many other golf tournaments being forced to close there is some thought that the tournaments may be forced to restructure their payouts.

I think in the next couple of years you're going to see a reset somewhere in the range of 20 to 30% range from a cost standpoint. If that happens it becomes a little bit more cost-effective and sponsors may want to get back into that again. But you are talking about $3-$4 million on an annualized basis and that's a lot of money to raise in this community.

The Corning classic did have the longest-running title sponsor on tour. So if the economy does begin to turn back or there is a 30% reset it costs, Corning Inc. could help bring back the classic a tournament that for now is saying goodbye.
