New Britain, CT (WBNG Binghamton) The Binghamton Mets slugged four homers and Greg Peavey allowed one unearned run over seven innings in an 8-1 win over the New Britain Rock Cats Monday night at New Britain Stadium. The four bombs matched a season-high and the victory was Peavey’s first since May 20.
For the first time in five games, the B-Mets drew first blood. Dykstra led off the second inning by blasting his first home run of the night to right against starter Aaron Thompson.
Binghamton kept the rally alive by loading the bases on two singles and a missed tag error by third baseman Deibinson Romero. Juan Lagares doubled the lead with a sac fly to center and Reese Havens capped the inning with an RBI single to right.
The Rock Cats took advantage of two errors to get on the board in the second. Joe Benson reached to start the inning when Sean Kazmar booted a groundball at short. Benson stole second and moved to third when catcher Francisco Pena’s throw sailed into center. Romero quickly brought him home with a sac fly to center.
Dykstra struck again in the third. The designated hitter deposited a 1-2 pitch from Thompson over the left center field wall to give Binghamton a 4-1 lead. It was Dykstra’s third-career multi-homer game and first with the B-Mets.
The lead was more than enough for Peavey. The righty shook off three errors behind him and motored through seven innings, matching his longest outing of the season. He allowed just three singles and struck out three to snap his personal nine-game winless streak.
Binghamton kept the power going and added insurance against reliever Edgar Ibarra. After watching Ibarra retire six straight, Eric Campbell led off the eighth with a towering home run to left. Ibarra walked Dykstra and paid for it when Sean Kazmar lined a two-run homer to left.
Dakota Watts came in and recorded the final two outs of the inning. Binghamton added one more run without a hit in the ninth.
The B-Mets bullpen secured the win with two scoreless innings. C.J. Nitkowski struck out three in a shutout eighth and Ryan Fraser supplied a perfect ninth.
The B-Mets (47-54) continue their series against the New Britain Rock Cats Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the hill against RHP Blake Martin.
