Erie, PA (WBNG BINGHAMTON) Travis Taijeron matched a career-high with five RBI to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Erie SeaWolves, 11-4, on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park. Taijeron racked up four hits, one of three B-Mets to register three hits or more, in Binghamton’s 15-hit attack. The victory trimmed the B-Mets’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot down to three.
Facing Jeff Ferrell for the sixth time this season, the B-Mets jumped on the SeaWolves’ starter in the second. Jayce Boyd hammered the righty’s first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his seventh home run of the season, giving Binghamton an early one-run lead.
Binghamton stretched their advantage out with a hit parade in the third. Brandon Nimmo and Dilson Herrera opened the charge with back-to-back one-out singles. Brian Burgamy brought both home by ripping a double down the right-field line. After a strikeout, TJ Rivera, Travis Taijeron and Xorge Carrillo supplied three consecutive RBI singles, chasing Ferrell from the contest.
Erie offered their rebuttal in the fourth against B-Mets starter Greg Peavey. With a runner on second, Steven Moya cleared the left-field wall for his league-leading 31st home run. The two-run shot cut Binghamton’s lead to four and boosted Moya’s RBI total to a league-best 95.
The B-Mets answered right back in the fifth. With a runner on first, Taijeron ripped an RBI double off the left-field wall against reliever Joe Mantiply. Two batters later, third baseman Corey Jones fired an errant throw to second on a potential inning-ending force out, allowing another run to score.
Erie scratched back with a run on three consecutive hits in the sixth to chase Peavey from the game. With runners at the corners, Aaron Westlake floated an RBI single into left, ending Peavey’s night after 5-1/3 innings. Chase Huchingson took over and stranded both runners, using a pair of ground outs to end the threat.
Taijeron capped his monster night with a big fly in the ninth. With two aboard, the B-Mets outfielder launched Will Startup’s 1-0 pitch deep over the left-center field wall for his 15th homer of the season.
Huchingson tossed two more innings, allowing one run on two hits before handing off to Dario Alvarez who closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning.
Peavey (10-3) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5-1/3 innings to collect the win. The righty struck out five and walked one. Ferrell (8-9) was tagged for six runs on eight hits over 2-2/3 innings in his fourth loss against the B-Mets.
The B-Mets (77-51) continue their three-game series against the SeaWolves on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Angel Cuan takes the mound against RHP Wilsen Palacios.
