BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators tied a season high with six goals and 12 B-Sens accounted for at least one point as they cruised past the Norfolk Admirals 6-2 Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Following a scoreless first period, Binghamton started the onslaught at 10:45 of the middle period as Denis Hamel netted his 24th goal of the season. Hamel received a pass from Aaron Slattengren and skated into the Norfolk zone with the puck on his backhand. Norfolk defensemen, Daryl Boyle, drove Hamel out of the play but fell into the Admirals netminder, Riku Helenius which drove the puck into the net. B-Sens netminder Jeff Glass was also credited with a secondary assist.
Aaron Slattengren picked up his first goal as a member of the Binghamton Senators when he wristed a shot past Helenius just over a minute later making the game 2-0. The puck bounced up into the air and the Norfolk netminder caught a string of bad luck as he kicked it into his own net. Greg Mauldin picked up the only assist on the play.
The third goal of the period came when three of the new B-Sens each tallied a point. Mark Bomersback fired a wrister from the right faceoff dot which went right through Helenius and into the back of the net. Jarrett Konkle and Bryan McGregor were credited with assists.
Greg Mauldin scored Binghamton’s fourth goal of the period less than a minute later. Denis Hamel passed the puck through traffic from behind the net where Mauldin was waiting to poke the puck past Helenius. Mauldin’s 16th goal of the season caused Norfolk to pull Helenius and replace him with backup netminder Craig Kowalski.
The B-Sens scored their fifth unanswered goal early in the third period when newcomer Matt Pope put a fancy move on the Norfolk defender and wristed a shot top shelf. Fellow newcomer Matt Taormina assisted on the marker, while leading scorer Ilya Zubov was credited with a secondary assist.
Norfolk finally scored its first goal when Chris Lawrence deflected a one-timer from the blue line past B-Sens’ netminder Jeff Glass making the game 5-1.
Zack Smith had the highlight of the night when he scored his 20th goal of the season to cap the scoring for Binghamton. Matt Carkner stole a puck at center ice and immediately passed to Smith who skated into the Norfolk zone. Smith made the defensemen miss by an impressive toe drag and put the puck over the netminder’s shoulder. The sixth goal ties a season high for the B-Sens.
The Admirals added the final goal of the game later when Juraj Simek won a faceoff in the Binghamton end. Brock Hooton poked the puck through Jeff Glass’s legs making the final score 6-2. The four-goal margin of victory also tied a season high for the B-Sens.
Glass turned away 30 shots to earn his fourth straight win and 12th of the season. With his two-point night (1+1), Hamel now needs just two points to become the 75th AHL player to have collected 500 points.
